Growth rebate baseline
A growth rebate baseline is the prior-period figure a growth incentive measures improvement against — last year’s purchases, last quarter’s volume, a contract-defined reference period. A growth rebate pays on the increment over the baseline (“2% if purchases exceed last year’s by 10%”), which makes the baseline as economically consequential as the rate itself: every dollar of the payout is defined relative to it.
Why the baseline is the program’s most fragile input
- Which period, measured how? Calendar year or fiscal year; invoiced or shipped; gross or net of returns. Two reasonable readings of “last year’s purchases” can differ by whole percentage points — and the growth threshold sits inside that noise.
- Adjusted for what? Acquisitions and divestitures change what “the same customer” means year over year. Product exits shrink the comparable base. A baseline that ignores structural change measures reorganization, not growth.
- Whose number is it? The customer’s purchasing system and the seller’s billing system rarely agree on history to the dollar. If the baseline wasn’t pinned — as data, not as a description — at signing, the year-end conversation starts with an argument about the past before it reaches the present.
The silent failure: an empty baseline
The most dangerous baseline is the missing one. If the calculation runs with a null or zero baseline, every dollar of current volume registers as “growth,” and the program silently pays on all volume instead of the increment — an over-accrual that looks plausible on every report until someone re-reads the contract. Any system computing growth incentives must treat the baseline as governed, visible, required data: loaded, inspectable, and versioned, so an empty reference fails loudly instead of paying quietly.
Growth disputes are baseline disputes. The operating fix — the baseline pinned as data the agreement references, with the increment computation traceable against it — is covered on the tiered volume & growth rebates page; the year-end reconciliation mechanics live under rebate true-up.
